The Town of Yarmouth (pop 6,518), the regional centre in Southwestern Nova Scotia, is seeking a talented and experienced leader in fire service to assume the critical role of Fire Chief.
Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, you will be responsible for providing leadership and direction on fire suppression emergency services, fire prevention, public education, operations, and programs in the service area. Managing a staff of eight career firefighters, one fire inspector, and 25+ volunteer firefighters, you will oversee the recruitment and training of all members and participate fully in all human resource activities.
Additionally, you will be responsible for the on-going management of administrative and operational services and be responsible for all matters of policy related to the Department.
As the ideal candidate, you possess appropriate academic or professional credentials in firefighting and have significant experience in fire service, including several years at a senior, supervisory level. Adept at working with both career and volunteer firefighters, you have a sound knowledge of human resources including supervision, development, training and discipline. You also bring extensive knowledge of fire regulations, safety, and policy development within a fire department.
Personally, you have exceptional communication, analytical, decision-making and customer service skills. You are a proven leader with the ability to develop others, exercise flexibility and initiative in changing circumstances, and act decisively under pressure.
