Executive Director – Bide Awhile Animal Shelter Society - POSITION FILLED

Founded in 1969, Bide Awhile is an animal shelter that provides support for homeless animals while they await their permanent home. As a no-kill shelter, they create a humane community for animals and provide education on pet guardianship, spaying and neutering, and other animal welfare issues.

The incumbent is retiring in mid-2019 and, on behalf of the Board of Directors, we are seeking a highly respected, animal welfare-focused individual as Executive Director.

What qualities are needed as Executive Director?

As the Executive Director, you will serve as the face of the organization to its many stakeholders and promote the welfare of animals from a place of compassion, dignity, and professionalism.

With a successful track record of accomplishments, you are skillful at building and maintaining relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders including donors, sponsors, volunteers, board of directors, media, government, and the community at large. Operationally, you have well-developed skills in finance, human resources, revenue development, public relations, marketing, and community engagement.

You are familiar with the local animal welfare challenges facing Nova Scotia in general and bring an understanding of best practices in the industry.

In this role, you will report to the Board of Directors. As such, you must have a full understanding of governance models and processes, and always provide sound advice on strategic, operational, and policy matters.

You have a practical and transparent approach to leadership and have experience in a not-for-profit environment. Specific experience in animal shelter management is preferred although not essential.
