The Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities is a membership-based organization mandated to represent the interests of 50 municipalities across Nova Scotia through advocacy, policy development, events, publications, and member services.
The incumbent is retiring in late 2018 and, on behalf of the Board of Directors and the members, we are seeking a highly-respected individual to lead the organization as its new CEO.
What qualities are needed in this role?
As the senior staff person, you will report directly to a Board of Directors—providing timely advice on strategic and policy matters while ensuring consistency with the NSFM strategic plan and policies.
These matters will include activities such as member relations, policy and program development, communications, government relations, short and long-term business planning, human resources and financial management.
As the ideal candidate, you are a politically savvy leader with a deep understanding of government in general, and municipal government in particular. You must have business intellect, presence, vision, social skills, and a strategic mindset—all of which will be deployed to benefit members of the Federation.
Your communication and government relations abilities must be outstanding as you will be called upon frequently to advocate for legislation and regulations that help municipalities grow and prosper.
Your range of operational skills includes human resources, financial management, administration, policy development, communications, and advocacy. You are also effective at building work teams, and capable of creating and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, such as members, government, affiliated organizations across Canada, the business community, and the general public.
Lastly, you have proven experience working with a high calibre Board of Directors and bring a complete understanding of governance.
