The Town of Antigonish is located in the northeastern corner of Nova Scotia. Home to St Francis Xavier University, it has approximately 5,200 residents and serves as a hub and service center for the surrounding rural communities. In addition to its natural beauty, the area offers state of the art educational and regional healthcare facilities and a vibrant culture of music, performing arts, visual arts and crafts, and fabulous festivals throughout the year.
On the Town’s behalf, we are seeking a highly motivated individual, knowledgeable in all aspects of municipal public works operations to serve in a newly created role of Superintendent of Public Works.
Reporting to the Director of Public Works, the role is responsible for the documented safe and effective use of Public Works Department resources in dealing with the operation and maintenance of the Town’s wastewater/stormwater collection and water distribution systems, municipal streets, sidewalks, parking lots, and public works equipment maintenance.
What qualities are required to be successful in this role?
As the ideal candidate, you have knowledge of all aspects of municipal operations, including roads, buildings and water/wastewater systems. You have at least two years of post-secondary technical education relative to the engineering discipline or equivalent. You also possess a minimum Nova Scotia Department of Environment Operator Level 1 Certification in water distribution and wastewater collection or the ability to obtain within one year of employment.
In addition to technical skills, your supervisory experience will equip you to effectively lead and inspire the unionized public works staff.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills will enable you to maintain positive relations with Town Departments, government agencies, outside services, utilities, and private contractors. Your well-developed planning, organizational and problem-solving skills allow you to complete projects on time and within budget.
