Somewhere between 40 and 50 years of age - about halfway through a career - many people feel the urge to live more authentically. They want to discover and experience more of the purpose and meaning of their life. Time begins to feel more valuable. Money becomes less of a motivator. Relationships become more important. Your work, once felt to be a channel to express your values, becomes monotonous and exhausting. The thought of changing careers, of doing something you're really passionate about, invades your thoughts.
But the very thought of a career change at this stage in your life frightens you. You have a good job with a respectable income, attractive benefits, and comfortable surroundings. You're well regarded for what you do and your future is relatively secure. A number of questions run through your mind: Why would I give that up? What else am I good at? What jobs are available for someone like me? Can I afford to take less pay for a job I really like? What would my friends think? What could I do that would really excite me?
Take comfort - you're not alone. Many mid-career people have hit the same crossroad and are experiencing the same feelings. As you transition through the most exciting phase of your life, the real question is: What do I do about it?
It's Your Turn: Renewing Your Career @ Mid-Life is an opportunity for you to explore the meaning and purpose of your life, and take concrete steps to find the type of work that matters in the second half of your career. Through a series of lectures, interactive exercises and practices, you will be guided through proven models and discover answers to your questions.
On Day 1, led by Martin Rutte, you will explore and uncover deeper guiding truths for yourself. You will:
- Discover your life's purpose and its power as a beacon
for action.
- Uncover the vision for the next chapter of your life.
- Learn how to achieve something you don't believe is possible.
- Re-kindle your dreams for yourself, your family, your work, and your world.
By the end of the first day, you will have a better understanding of the exciting possibilities for what's next, a renewed sense of motivation to act, and a simple clarity of what you need to do.
On Day 2, facilitated by Gerry Walsh, you will begin putting your findings from Day 1 into practice. You will learn how to:
- Establish realistic, meaningful career goals and sound strategies for implementing them that will ultimately lead to a successful career shift.
- Identify employers and jobs that align with your career values and needs.
- Identify your transferable skills and how these can be applied in careers you hadn't considered before.
- Construct an effective, powerful resume that describes your experience, interests and
skills wholly.
- Assess your strengths and shortcomings to determine if further skill development is needed.
- Develop a marketing and networking strategy that will lead to the right opportunities
for you.
- Present yourself confidently in an interview.
