How to Answer the 'Tell Me About Yourself' QuestionMost employers start the interview with some version of the question: "Tell me about yourself." Here's a guide you can follow when answering that puzzling question. You can structure your response in two parts: the professional and the personal. You might begin with your resume summary, starting with education and then outlining your work experience, from oldest to most recent. Be sure to speak of competencies and experiences related to the position for which you are interviewing. On the personal side, you might talk about where you live or grew up, where you went to school, unique hobbies, travel or volunteer work. Close your response with a transitional statement explaining why you are looking for other opportunities, the type of job you are seeking, and the kind of employer you would like to work for. You should limit your answer to about five minutes. This ought to be a high level, 'broad brush' response. More detailed information about your experience will unfold later in the interview.
