Executive Director
Project # 1406W

The Brunswick Street Mission (BSM) is a long-serving, not-for-profit organization that provides a United Church of Canada ministry of care and assistance to people living in poverty in the inner city of Halifax and surrounding communities. The mission works in partnership with other social and religious agencies to serve as an advocate and agent of change for those it serves. On behalf of BSM, we are seeking an experienced Executive Director who will lead the administration, coordination and daily functioning of the organization.

Reporting to a Board of Directors, you will be responsible for managing all day-to-day activities of BSM including programming, fund development, public relations and communications, finances, human resources and operations. Managing a small staff and an experienced team of volunteers, you will provide appropriate direction and support to ensure all goals are achieved. You will be responsible for managing the financial affairs of the organization including preparation of budgets and business plans, and will provide regular updates to the Board of Directors. As Executive Director, you will build strong relationships in the community as you liaise with outside supporters and stakeholders, including donors, corporate groups, volunteers, and other agencies and associations. You will also interact with appropriate levels of government to ensure open and communicative relationships exist and that government officials are informed about the issues affecting the community that BSM serves.

As the ideal candidate, you have proven experience in the not-for-profit sector and possess well-honed skills in program delivery, finance, fundraising, administration, communications, human resources, and conflict resolution. In the past, you have worked with a Board of Directors and therefore have a clear insight into governance issues. Your ability to motivate volunteers and staff is well recognized, while your collaborative and consultative approach to conducting your work is very much respected. You understand the challenges of running a community organization and display initiative and sound judgment at all times. Personally, you possess integrity, compassion for others, flexibility, excellent communication abilities, and respect for diversity. Experience within a faith ministry is preferred but not required; a post secondary education is an asset but not required. Salary is in the $45,000 range.
